Myanmar, formerly called Burma, nestled between India and Bangladesh on the west, China on the north/northeast and Thailand on the east, was controlled by a military dictatorship for 49 years until 2011 when it began to open up slightly to outside influences. Christians are still oppressed and limited in many areas of Myanmar life. There are 155 people groups among the 53.7 million population and 50 groups (45 million) are still considered unreached. Buddhist make up 75% of the population followed by a mix of Hindu, Muslim and other ethnic religions. Christians (many are nominal) make up 8.8% and of those, 5% are evangelical.

Myanmar's borders still continue to produce great conflict with a persecuted Muslim minority bordering Bangladesh, Hindu conflict area bordering India, while the China, Laos and Thai borders struggle with drug havens of heroin and meth pill traffic.

God continues to build His church in Myanmar, and has used missionaries like Adoniram Judson, who served nearly 40 years in Burma during the first half of the 1800's. We will be serving with a wonderful national leader, Rev. Dr. Morris Liana, who we met while he was a student at Asbury Theological Seminary in the late 1990's. He often came to eat with us during the holidays, at the WGM student center we ran for 6 years, before our coming to GHO.

Morris is the General Secretary for the Myanmar Evangelical Christian Alliance that unites nearly a hundred Christian entities. Morris founded and is president of Union Biblical Seminary (UBS), on the outskirts of Yangon. He and his wife, Sonia, recently founded Galilee Children's Home on the same seminary campus, for over 30 orphans who now have a family to love them. He also serves as the National Director for the Jesus Film project. He and Sonia have 4 children, who love the Lord and are serving Him in their studies and young careers. He has pastored in and also been the Superintendent of the Myanmar Wesleyan Church.

Our first team will be limited to 15 team members comprised of 4-5 medical providers (including a dermatologist), 2 dentists, 1-2 hygienists, 1 pharmacist, 1 physical therapist, 2-3 nurses and 2 logistics.

Korean Airlines has a direct flight from Atlanta to Seoul (15.5 hours going west) and then a 6 hour flight to Yangon. We will leave on the 9th and arrive at 10 PM on the 10th.. We will set up the clinic on the UBS campus the AM of the 11th and then run the clinic for the neighboring Buddhist communities on the afternoon of the 11th and all day the 12th. The 13th we will travel 2 hours to a children (age 6-15) prison and spend the day with 300-400 "inmates". By offering to pay for their lunch ($1 per child) we will have access to them all day to do a clinic, share, love and engage them as the arms, feet and embrace of Jesus. Local churches serve these children and our clinic will open doors for more churches to begin ministering to the "little inmates".

We will fly 2 hours to Kalaymyo (NW corner of Myanmar) on the 14th where we will set up clinic in the Kalaymyo Wesleyan Bethany Clinic. We will attend and speak in churches on the 15th and begin clinic the 16th. The whole team will serve in Kalaymyo the first day. The 17th-18th, we will split the team and part of the team will drive to a village 1 hour away, to set up a Wesleyan church compound and invite the Buddhist community. We will fly back to Yangon on the 19th. The 20th will be a day of site seeing in Yangon and do some prayer walking as we visit the world's largest Pagoda. We then depart at 11 PM on the 20th and arrive back in the USA on the 21st, Saturday.

We will stay in the Golf City Resort hotel in Yangon and the new Majesty Hotel in Kalaymyo. Both hotels include a breakfast buffet while our meals for lunch and dinner will include a variety of experiences.

Cultural and spiritual preparations include reading books on Adoniram Judson, Buddhism: A Christian Exploration and Appraisal By: Keith Yandell, Harold Netland, and Morris's dissertation from Asbury Seminary on the Wesleyan church in Myanmar:

Our partners, interpreters, and national colleagues come from the Wesleyan and other churches and seminaries to form an alliance of strong nationals who will be able to do follow up and discipleship. Our goal is to establish a long term strategic partnership to advance the planting and nurturing of local churches while focusing on discipleship training among evangelical churches.

Prayerfully consider joining me on this pioneer trip for GHO to Myanmar, that God will call and prepare you for this demanding trip physically and spiritually, into, until recently, a very restrictive country that is greatly on God's heart.
