My medical mission trip to Guatemala was very humbling and deeply rewarding. Setting up for the week, my previous experience as a pharmacy technician was put to use as we lacked a pharmacist on our trip. I did my best with the help of my gracious teammates and we made it throughout the week without a problem! In the clinical visit rooms with the physicians on the trip, I quickly realized our capabilities to provide thorough medical care were restricted due to limited diagnostic modalities and prescription drugs on hand. This was initially troubling for me as I worried we would be able to provide limited medical care. However, after prayer and discussion with my teammates, I came to the conclusion that in addition to our best medical care, our number one responsibility was to connect with our patients both on a spiritual and personal level. These connections and the ability to connect patients with Jesus superseded any one drug we might've been missing on the trip. Although I was exhausted mentally and physically for most of the trip, I truly believe this trip was a once in a lifetime opportunity, to spread the gospel and practice this medicine at this point in my medical training. I would most definitely recommend any GHO trip to anyone considering attending!
