For one, it may seem small, but to the patient that is given the ability to read again-is priceless. As a triage nurse serving in the Dominican Republic, I was informed by a patient that she could no longer read and was in need of reading glasses. After a few test pairs, she was sent home with a set of reading glasses. Later in the week, the same lady came to my triage table to offer baked goods she made as a "thank you" for her new found ability to read again. Not only that, but she waited in line over 4 hours for her turn into triage just to say thank you!
I was touched and my eyes swelled immediately just seeing her smile. It's humbling to see how grateful the DR people are, yet the need they feel to give back to us.

This patient will never be forgotten!
